Welcome!

My name is Mike Hernandez and I am excited to be a part of the MVA community. I am from San Diego and I went to St. Augustine HS. After graduating, I attended Northeastern University where I earned a BS in Criminal Justice. I thin came home to San Diego and decided law enforcement and law school were not for me. I moved to Long Beach where I attended CSU Long Beach. I received my Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Sciences. While attending, I chose to take the full History coursework to prove subject matter competency. Due to this, I am well equipped to teach all levels of History.

This year we will be using Google Classroom (Code: eun16) and Khan Academy (Code: X9M9VBTM). Students will also be asked to complete assignments from their textbooks weekly. Students should expect about 5 hours of work to be completed at home per week.

I strongly encourage that students attend class daily. During class, I will be reviewing the material from the book that students worked on at home. I will be making sense of what they read while providing more clarity and answering any questions they may have. I will also be doing class activities with students that they may be responsible for finishing or extending their learning at home.

I look forward to teaching this class this year. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy assignments are mostly meant to be supplemental assignments that I will add to help you with your studies. The assigned modules are not always mandatory. The only time they will be mandatory is when I add the assignment to Google Classroom. If you do not see it on Google Classroom it is optional, however, I highly encourage you to complete any that I assign.

A Typical Week

A typical week in this class will entail about a full chapter of book work to be done at home, then 2 in class discussions/activities that will be completed in class. These assignments are not typically finished for homework, but at times they will. It is imperative that students check the syllabus and Google Classroom DAILY. Please see the links for both on this page for more specifics about this week's assignments and activities.

Counselor Google Classroom

If your student is experiencing difficulty with the current situation or having social/emotional issues in general, please have them join our Counselor Kristy Robertson's Google Classroom - code: 4v4sa2v.
