Mission & Vision

Ramona Community School (RCS) encompasses two alternative education options provided by the Ramona Unified School District. They are the Montessori program and the Mountain Valley Academy home study program. The school was developed in response to community interest and requests for alternative education, which has been provided by the district since 1982. Parents continue to be involved in the evolution and implementation of the education process to a great degree. Site-based decision making is a cornerstone of the school.

Ramona Community School continues to grow and change and respond to the needs of the community. This is a school which embraces, rather than resists, change. The current offerings are as follows: the Montessori program serves students in grades K-8 and the Mountain Valley Academy home study program serves students in grades K-12.

Both the Montessori and MVA programs have some very unique features, offering exciting and innovative academic instruction for the young people in our community. Both programs emphasize parent participation in education. The MVA program does this through a contractual arrangement wherein parents take responsibility for the delivery of academic lessons. In the Montessori program, parents participate through volunteering in the classroom and school activities. Both programs have strong parent participation in school organizations and functions. Individualized learning is a major component of the Montessori and the MVA home study philosophy, although arrived at through different means within each program.

Topics are introduced using real life, concrete examples and the child's observations. There is no limit to the scope of information as memorization of facts gives way to the training of the mind. The child learns through his own activity and is given the mental freedom to pursue what he needs.

Every effort is made to provide long, uninterrupted work times. This provides the child with the time to focus and concentrate on his/her work. It facilitates quality work with time for in-depth studies.

Mountain Valley Academy Program

Mountain Valley Academy serves students in grades K-12 on the Ramona Community School campus. Home study students in all grades may study exclusively at home or take advantage of the two day on-campus option. The program is provided by means of an independent study enrollment agreement, which is signed and entered into by both parents and students with the school district. This agreement places a significant responsibility on the family, but can be a very rewarding and successful experience for those who make the commitment.

Independent study is an alternative to classroom instruction with the educational goals and objectives of the district's adopted curriculum. Although independent study does not provide an alternative curriculum, assignments are written individually for each student and may include specialized or alternative goals and objectives for that student.

Enrollment agreements are written and signed at least once per semester for each student. Assignments for students are written at least monthly. The assignments are usually written in collaboration with parents, especially as parents become experienced at home study. Students who are new to the program or who have special circumstances may have assignments written weekly or bi-monthly. Throughout the week the student records his/her daily assignments and activities on a work log. The student's work, along with the log, is turned in weekly for the teacher to review.

Mountain Valley Academy provides a two day on-campus option. Depending on the grade level, students are provided with a Tuesday/Wednesday or a Wednesday/Thursday on-campus program for grades K-7.. Students are provided with art while on campus. Additionally, classroom teachers conduct activities such as science and math labs and literary discussions during the two days. Teachers also use this time to assess individual progress and give feedback to parents during conference time. Our 8th grade - 12th grade program times vary per the students scheduled academic courses.

The independent study teacher supports, evaluates and supervises the instruction which occurs at home. To do this, the teacher provides a wide range of services for parents and students. These include:

  • newsletters
  • individual tutoring or academic testing as needed
  • small group tutorials
  • workshops
  • parent training seminars
  • phone conferences
  • weekly or monthly appointments
  • check out of school and media center books and materials

Welcome Parents

Dear Ramona Families,

Welcome to Ramona Community School!

This is our 33rd year of offering alternative education options for Ramona families. Our Montessori Academy is for students in grades Kindergarten through six (including Transitional Kindergarten), and our independent study program, Mountain Valley Academy engages students K-12. We value our partnerships with families, and work to expand learning out to our wider community through consultants in the arts and field trips.

Montessori education emphasizes:

  • children developing and growing according to their own needs and at their own pace
  • observation
  • individual liberty (choice of learning activity throughout the day)
  • preparation of the (learning) environment

Our Montessori classrooms are multi-age (K-1, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6), and families should plan on a two to three year commitment to the Montessori program for maximum benefit.

Mountain Valley Academy students may study exclusively at home, or take advantage of the on-campus option (2 days for K-7, 4-5 days for 8-12). With educational goals and objectives of the Ramona Unified School District's adopted curriculum, independent study weaves alternative instruction with assignments tailored to the individual student.

RCS Academies are open to any family in Ramona. Space, however, is limited. Each year, applications are accepted beginning February 1. We do suggest a scheduled appointment (760.787.3600) to explore if an RCS Academy is a good match for your student and family. We look forward to working with your student.
